Anniversary of the association for the preservation of the Saffenburg ruins

The board of the Mayschoss-Altenahr winegrowers’ cooperative had invited guests to its restaurant Krisenherd (literally: trouble cooker) for this occasion. The high attendance – the seats were fully booked – testifies to the special significance of the castle ruins of what was once the largest castle on the Ahr far beyond the borders of Mayschoss.

After a weatherproof hut was built on the plateau a few years ago, the association runs a small club café there on typical seasonal weekends, or rather a wine bar with snacks. The German Wine Institute (DWI) named the viewpoint on the Oberburg plateau the most beautiful wine view in the Ahr in 2020.

Every year, Mayschoss artist Reiner Hess creates a new wine label for a very special wine from the world’s first and oldest winegrowers’ cooperative, WG Mayschoss-Altenahr eG: the Saffenburg edition. For every bottle sold, EUR 1.00 is donated to the Saffenburg e. V. support association, which has now been in existence for 25 years.

I am happy to take my guests on interesting premium wine walks, including to the ruins of Saffenburg Castle. Or, this is currently unique on the Ahr: we can taste several vintages of the Edition Saffenburg as part of a vertical wine tasting. Simply send an enquiry via my contact form.
